Flax vs Fish Oil
Even when you are sure about a supplement, how do you know where to get it from? Both flax seed and fish oil are fantastic sources of omega 3 fatty acids: nature's super health supplement. What is the difference? Flax seed generally refers to the seeds from the fruit of the Linseed plant, an annual from the Linaceae family. These two omega 3 fatty acids are the most researched and are the subject of most of the studies regarding heart and mind health. Contrary to flax seed, fish oil does not contain significant amounts of the detrimental omega 6 acids.
In a direct comparison, fish oil generally prevails as the optimum source for your omega 3 fatty acid intake. In addition to possessing both of the acids which are essential for the heart and brain health benefits, it contains less harmful substances. Considering the relatively small yield of omega 3 fatty acid in flax seed relative to volume, more of the harmful substances would be ingested in order to obtain enough omega 3.
Most research, including that of the American Heart Association, prefers fish oil to flax seed. That considered, flax seed is not to be thrown completely to the wayside. Flax is a sufficient alternative for vegetarians who would prefer not to consume a fish based product.
While the same seemingly would apply to those who don't like the taste of fish, keep in mind that fish oil capsules generally are tasteless. Finally, some research argues that stomach enzymes can transform the alpha-linolenic acid in flax seed into the superior duo found in fish oil. However, other research is quick to notice that this rarely takes place inside the body. When it comes time to make your decision, it is hard to argue with the research.
In this case, the research, the test results, and the American Heart Association side with fish oil as the superior omega 3 fish oil delivery system. That leaves little reason why you shouldn't as well.
